Ersten Tagen – First Days

Blick auf mein Frühstück!

In the past I have said, when it comes to traveling, I love to be in a new place, but I absolutely hate the actual act of traveling there. That is still true. Even when things go exactly as planned, it is exhausting. Our flight was on time leaving, but we had to stay in [...]

Everything’s Gone To Hell In One Day

blahblah

<– A drawing would go here, if I hadn’t spent most of the day crying hysterically. Everything was falling nicely into place for our departure to Germany. ChiefDork got us an apartment confirmed, I had booked a kitty-friendly hotel for the first two nights, and we had plane tickets for a nonstop flight. I took the [...]

Like Wearing Shoes On The Wrong Feet

As an exercise to work on my German, I’ve been staging imaginary conversations in my head, imagining some everyday situations. The problem I keep having is Spanish getting in the way: “Hola!” [DAMMIT!] “Buenos morgen.” [DAMMIT!] “Ich möchte ein klein Kaffee, bitte.” “Möchten Sie mit suchre y milch?” [DAMMIT!] Trying to get my brain to [...]

Schleppin’

FreaksOnAPlane

We have purchased our plane tickets, and therefore, finally have a real date for arrival in Germany: July 13th! (We’re leaving Houston on the 12th.) Being the art nerd that I am, I have created an illustration showing what we’ll be taking with us on the plane. On the bottom half are Chief Dork’s items: a backpack with his laptop, a carrier containing Cat the Elder, and “The Beast,” our huge honking suitcase. Chief Dork gets a 10-hour reprieve from the latter two items at check-in.

1 Day Left

The kitty-shipping crisis is now taken care of. I originally booked with Delta Cargo, and while I was happy with their price ($600), I was VERY unhappy with everything else: I had no information beyond a reference number, no reliable source to get information, and there would be a 4.5 hour layover in Atlanta. Next, [...]

How To Clear A Room In 60 Days

Hello...ello...ello...

Trying to get rid of the majority of our stuff has involved several phases, tactics, and last-ditch efforts.
For any Houstonians wanting to do their own “Great Purge of 2011,” here are the resources I’ve used:

'Scuse Me T-shirt design

Eight weeks ago, I started participating in the weekly Shirt Woot Derby. The moderators assign a topic Thursday at noon, then open it up to artist submissions at noon the next day. My first entries were weak, at best. I had just started teaching myself to use a graphics tablet, and I just couldn’t grasp the [...]

The Stuff That Binds Us

The bane of my existence

Over a month ago, I began the process of selling nearly everything we own. (Pro Tip: It’s tougher than you think it will be.) Any time we have moved in the last 3 years, I took (what I thought was) a hard look at why we have the things that we have, and whether they’re [...]
